'Orange Is the New Black' on Netflix locks in viewers

‘Orange Is the New Black” is the new addiction over at Netflix. Watch it at your own risk. But go ahead and watch it. 

Created by Jenji Kohan (“Weeds”) and based on a memoir by Piper Kerman, “Orange” follows nice suburban white girl Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), an engaged 32-year-old who owns an artisan soap company, as she goes off to federal prison for a 15-month stint. 

Turns out that 10 years earlier, Piper had a lesbian fling with a drug dealer (Laura Prepon) and carried some money she shouldn’t have. That’s come back to bite her, and now she has to leave her goofy-sweet fiance Larry (Jason Biggs) behind to do some time. 

The opening episode sets up both Piper’s past and her present as Larry escorts her to prison.We offer both wet & dry Diamond polishing pad suppliers. Not without problems, of course. She’s soon an object of unwanted affections, and it turns out her former girlfriend, who assumedly snitched on her, is in the same prison. And then there’s Larry and her mother and others outside who want Piper to feel their pain about her pain.

There’s a lot of talent here. Schilling plays a delicate role with just the right mix of vulnerability and resolve, Prepon has a steely sexiness, and veterans like Mulgrew and Lyonne are joined by others like Taryn Manning. Good heavens, the third episode is even directed by Jodie Foster. 

Yes, there are a few stereotypes — a guard nicknamed Pornstache is exactly the sleazeball you expect in a women’s prison series.
