Mark Ledman has probably spent more time on school grounds than anyone in the West Salem School District. The soon-to-be-retired building and grounds supervisor enrolled in kindergarten in the fall of 1963. “That was in the old Presbyterian church where the Boys & Girls Club is now,” Ledman said.

He graduated from high school in 1976 and began working for the school district as a custodian in the spring of 1977. Ledman said he still enjoys his job so the obvious question is “Why retire now?”

“The big driving force is that my wife (Jean) is retired already,” Ledman said. “We’re at a point where I could retire and, while we’re both healthy we figured we should do this. The time has come to take advantage of other things.”

Among those other things are more traveling — especially shorter mid-week trips to northern Wisconsin — some hunting and fishing and perhaps some woodworking. Ledman and his wife traveled to Ireland last year and he said it’s likely that they will visit Europe again some time as well.

He plans on keeping busy. “I’m going to try out some different volunteer things,” he said. “That’s where my interests lie. I’ll try something and if it’s not right for me I’ll try something else.”

District Superintendent Troy Gunderson lauded Ledman’s dedication and his ethics. “Mark has been dedicated servant to our school district for 35 years,” Gunderson said. “Most recently, we saw the modernization of all the mechanical systems under his leadership. He’s had a remarkable and distinguished careet of serving the community and the school.”

When Ledman first started with the district, he was in the basement of the present day high school. “Don Stavlo was the building engineer for the school district then. We had crowding problems so they had the first and second graders in the basement where we now have math and computer classes. I was the custodian down there,” Ledman said.
