Track enjoys big turnout

It was perhaps fitting that several legendary performances filled the 12-race card Saturday during the annual Louisiana Legends Night at Evangeline Downs. 

What was perhaps the track’s largest crowd this season saw veteran jockey Mark Guidry ride five winners — four of those in the night’s $100,000 stakes races — and Corey Lanerie guide Sunbean, a three-year-old colt owned by Evelyn Benoit, to a mile-record main track time of 1:35.75.

Napravnik climbed aboard five horses on Legends Night, but her best effort came in the fourth race when she finished second astride No Rules Now, about a length behind Guidry on Well’s Gold. 

Guidry, who has ridden nearly 5,200 winners since his career began in 1975 at the Evangeline Downs track in Carencro, said his effort on Saturday was memorable.
