Bethlehem Township sinkhole expanding

The yellow excavator plunged its toothy steel maw into the yawning sinkhole along Wilson Avenue, plumbing the extent of the cavern beneath the street.

Stephen Gallagher, Bethlehem Township fire marshal, said the sinkhole likely runs from the side yard of Doris Jenkins' home, where it opened up Sunday, and under Wilson Avenue to the intersection with Second Street, the site of a recent sewer line repair. Jenkins' home is at 1502 Second St.

The sinkhole, which was 30 feet wide and 12 deep on Sunday, was about half again as big by Monday afternoon. Township employees said they would shore up a sewer pipe beneath the street, then fill the sinkhole with a mixture of sand and concrete.

Gallagher declared Jenkins' home uninhabitable. On Sunday, Jenkins said the ceiling in part of her house separated from the wall, likely due to the house shifting.

Several other neighbors came to gawk at the big hole, the enormous black pipe snaking across the street to divert sewage, and the big yellow excavator.

Gallagher said the sinkhole doesn't affect any of the other properties in the neighborhood.
