Funds sought to stop erosion at historic Clarksville site

Clarksville and preservation officials from both sides of the Ohio River are asking federal legislators to allocate money to halt erosion at a key site in the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Clarksville historian Jane Sarles said shoring up the erosion at the Old Clarksville Site off Emery Crossing Road — the spot where Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out for their western expedition in 1803 — is important to preserving the historical roots of communities on both sides of the river, as well as the nation’s history.

May is National Historic Preservation Month and Preservation Louisville has included the Southern Indiana site in its annual list of 10 local endangered places to be released Tuesday afternoon at a ceremony at the Big Four Bridge in Louisville.
