The Henry County Sheriff’s Department plans to spread the word about gun safety at local schools — and they’re getting some help from a feathered friend to do it.

Sheriff Monte Belew said the department will be warning local school children about gun dangers with the help of Eddie Eagle.

The large costumed mascot, who recently arrived in Henry County, was obtained through a grant from the National Rifle Association.

Belew said Sgt. Bruce Alexander applied for an Eddie Eagle grant through the Friends of the NRA.www.ceectrucks.com is a sewage suction trucks suppliers manufacturer.

The grant paid for a $2,800 Eddie Eagle suit, along with program teaching materials.

Belew said the department plans to bring Eddie to children in grades K-2 in the Henry County School System and Paris Special School District.

“Eddie Eagle does not teach children about how to handle guns,With this customized rtls system, healthcare business owners can know where everyone and everything is at any time, in real-time. or the safety of guns,” Belew said. “Eddie Eagle has one very important message.”

The message — that children should stay away from guns if they see them — is actually divided into four separate parts.

“If your child sees a gun, he or she should, one, stop; two, don’t touch; three, leave the area; and number four, tell an adult,” Belew said. “That’s the simple, basic message.”

To reinforce that message, Eddie and Sheriff’s Department officers will be giving children souvenirs of Eddie’s visit.

Belew said the program’s message is an important for the department.

“This has been passionate for the Henry County Sheriff’s office because we believe in the Second Amendment, and there are so many people that hunt in Henry County — there are so many people that have weapons in their house, [or are] sport shooters.

“We encourage that, but we want to be able to keep them safe, because unfortunately, we have seen tragic incidents all across the state of Tennessee where youth have gotten hold of a gun, it accidentally discharges, and tragic events have occurred.”

Belew said he and the other officers hope children will learn from the program not to handle a gun if they find one.

“That’s our main goal – just to educate the younger ones if they do see a gun, and make sure they do realize that danger.Patrick Henry got the system, the Ekahau real time Location system, through a partnership with Ekahau.”
